Daniel Ruda in court for murder.

Princess of Darkness.

20-year-old German national, Manuela Bartel, responded to the advert with a resounding yes. Manuela was also looking for her dark soulmate, one to share the delights of Satan with, and she had been practicing for longer than Daniel.

At the age of 13, she was arrested for biting pedestrians in the street. She was also known to crawl on the ground in an attempt to bite people’s ankles. She was seen multiple times by a psychiatrist but never admitted to hospital.

In the three years that followed, her condition deteriorated. She believed Satan had been trying to contact her through her dreams and had visions during her waking hours. Unable to control the onslaught, she left school and overdosed on drugs.

She survived but decided to run away from Germany at the age of 16 and move to England. She got work at a goth club in London and managed to get by with help from new friends. There, she met like-minded people following the vampiric lifestyle and became involved in bloodletting.

It was to her, an education in vampirism, as London has always been known for its underground goth culture, where extremists are allowed to hide. She shared her blood and drank the blood of others before realising she needed time alone.

She went to work at a hotel on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. It closed during the Winter months but she was allowed to board there. The minimal daylight and deep cloud cover of the Western Isles during the Winter felt like home. She enjoyed the dark atmosphere, claiming that sunlight hurt her eyes.

Before she replied to Daniel’s advert, she wrote a letter to a man who lived in a hut on the Isle of Skye. His name was Tom Leppard, a man in his sixties known as The Leopard Man, for having his entire body tattooed in Leopard spots.

She lived with him for many months but decided he wasn’t for her. In 1998, she returned home to Germany where she worked in goth clubs. In 2000, Manuela saw the ad from Daniel and decided to reply to him.
